Deborah Snyder and Eric Newman are thankful that Zack Snyder’s upcoming movie “Rebel Moon” isn’t a Star Wars project, they said. Initially, Snyder had pitched the idea to Lucasfilm as a Star Wars film shortly after the company was acquired by Disney in 2012. However, wanting to create something for more mature viewers, Snyder and Newman redeveloped the concept and ultimately landed a deal with Netflix.

Deborah Snyder, who is also Zack’s wife and a producer on the film, revealed that she had reservations about the limitations that would come with making a Star Wars film. She felt that Snyder’s creative freedom would be hindered despite the project being independent of the established Star Wars universe. So she was relieved when the deal fell through, believing that their team had learned valuable lessons from their previous work with superheroes and creating new worlds.

Newman explained that Snyder had initially approached him about the concept, which Snyder called “Seven Jedi in the ‘Star Wars’ universe,” about 15 years ago. At the time, they saw potential in turning it into a television show. Newman jokingly expressed his excitement, stating, “F-ck ‘Star Wars!’ Let’s do this as a TV show.”

Rebel Moon: Part One, subtitled A Child of Fire, is set to premiere on Netflix in December 2023. The film’s screenplay was co-written by Snyder, Kurt Johnstad, and Shay Hatten. It features a star-studded cast including Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Anthony Hopkins, and Jena Malone.

The film’s synopsis describes a colony on the edge of the galaxy facing a threat from the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius. In response, they send a young woman with a mysterious past to recruit warriors from neighboring planets to help defend their colony.

Rebel Moon: Part One is marketed as a science fantasy rather than science fiction, and the creative team, including Snyder, is eager to showcase the skills they have honed throughout their careers in this unique space.
