After-School Hanako-Kun is based on Aidalro’s spin-off manga of the same name, which offers a more “upbeat” take on the main Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun series. It follows the everyday lives of Hanako-kun and his friends as they navigate their way through supernatural adventures. The manga was created by Aidalro and has been serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly GFantasy Magazine since 2014.

The rebooted series will have a different directorial and script team compared to the original. Masaki Kitamura, known for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Tiger & Bunny, will be directing the series at Lerche. Kazuma Nagatomo, who worked on Bakugan: Armored Alliance, will be in charge of the series composition. Aya Higami will serve as the chief animation director, and Hiroshi Takaki will compose the series’ music. Akari Kito, Megumi Obata, and Shoya Chiba will reprise their roles as Nene, Hanako-kun, and Kou Minamoto, respectively.

The original Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun manga has gained a dedicated fanbase since its debut in 2014. The story is set in Kamome Academy, a school where strange and unexplainable things happen. The protagonist, Nene Yashiro, discovers a rumor that a spirit named Hanako-Kun will grant wishes if one visits the third stall of the third-floor girl’s bathroom. To her surprise, Hanako-Kun is real and takes the form of a high school-aged boy. However, Nene unintentionally falls under a mermaid’s curse and must bind herself to Hanako in order to save herself. As they spend more time together, Nene develops feelings for Hanako and becomes curious about his past.
