Master Takagi-San Manga Series Wraps Up

Teasing Master Takagi-San, or Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san in Japanese, was first serialized in Gessan mini, a companion booklet for Monthly Shonen Sunday magazine, in June 2013. The story follows the antics of Takagi, a girl who enjoys teasing her classmate Nishikata. Nishikata tries to get revenge on Takagi but is always outsmarted by her. Despite their constant pranks and teasing, there is an underlying affection between the two characters. The manga’s humor is derived from Nishikata’s exaggerated reactions to Takagi’s antics. Soichiro Yamamoto also created a spin-off manga called Ashita Wa Doyobi (Tomorrow Is Saturday), which focuses on the comedic misadventures of three schoolgirls.

Teasing Master Takagi-San was later adapted into an anime by Shin-Ei Animation, the studio behind Doraemon. The anime aired for three seasons from January 2018 to March 2022. The adaptation was directed by Hiroaki Akagi, with Fumi Tsubota, Michiko Yokote, and Touko Machida writing the script for the first season. Aki Itami, Hiroko Futuda, and Kanichi Katou collaborated on the script for seasons 2 and 3. The voice actors Rie Takahashi and Yuuki Kaji played the roles of Takagi and Nishikata, respectively.

In June 2022, Teasing Master Takagi-San also received a film adaptation. The movie follows Nishikata and Takagi-san during their last summer vacation of junior high school. They find an abandoned kitten at a shrine and decide to adopt it, naming it Hana. The film was directed by Hiroaki Akagi and featured the same script team from seasons 2 and 3 of the anime. Teasing Master Takagi-San: The Movie had a limited theatrical release in North America.
