In a massive crossover movie, Lupin the Third and Cat’s Eye, two iconic band of thieves from the world of manga and anime, will come together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lupin the Third anime and the 40th anniversary of the Cat’s Eye manga. The movie, titled Lupin the Third vs Cat’s Eye, will be exclusive to Amazon Prime Video and is set to be released on January 27, 2023.
Lupin The Third vs. Cat’s Eye
Lupin the Third, created in 1967 by Monkey Punch, is a gentleman thief who has spawned a highly successful anime franchise. It has had seven seasons, eleven movies, live-action adaptations, TV specials, and more. On the other hand, Cat’s Eye, created by Tsukasa Hojo in 1981, revolves around three sisters who are skilled thieves and only steal artwork that once belonged to their missing father. Both series feature groups of skilled and cunning thieves, but with different motives.
The movie, which features CG animation, will be directed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita, known for their work on the Godzilla: Planet of Monster series of films. Kanichi Kurita returns as the voice of Lupin, while Keiko Toda reprises her role as Hitomi Kisugi from the original 1983 Cat’s Eye anime. A teaser trailer and visuals were released in September 2022, and a new visual and trailer were released on December 6, showcasing the exciting action sequences to expect from the movie.
Set in the 1980s, the movie follows both groups of thieves as they go after the same target – three paintings left behind by the Cat’s Eye sisters’ father. This leads to an epic showdown between the Lupin gang and the Cat’s Eye sisters, with the treasures also holding the key to a long-lost mystery, in traditional Lupin fashion. The movie follows the success of Lupin III: The First, released in 2021 and the first Lupin movie fully animated in CG. The Cat’s Eye sisters previously appeared in City Hunter the Movie: Shinjuku Private Eyes, another crossover movie with the City Hunter franchise.
Lupin the Third vs Cat’s Eye showcases the longevity of manga and anime franchises, with new generations of fans constantly coming on board. As two milestones in the industry, this movie will celebrate the legacy of Lupin the Third and Cat’s Eye while introducing these beloved series to a new generation of fans. The movie will be exclusively available on Amazon Prime Video from January 27, 2023.
