Fans of Urusei Yatsura can look forward to the return of their favorite alien princess next year. The official website for the popular 2022 reboot of the series recently announced that it will be releasing in January 2024, accompanied by a new promotional poster. The poster not only features the main cast but also teases the introduction of a brand-new character. The reboot, produced by David Productions, will consist of four parts, or “cours,” and will have a total of 46 episodes. The second cour concluded in March 2023 with the release of Episode 23.

Cour 3 of the series will see the return of most of the key staff and cast members from the previous parts. Takahiro Kamei, known for their work on Strike Witches: Road to Berlin, will return as the director. Hideya Takahashi and Yasuhiro Kimura will also come back as co-directors, and Yuuko Kakihara will be in charge of the series composition. Hiroshi Kamiya and Sumire Uesaka will reprise their roles as Ataru and Lum, respectively.

Before creating iconic series like Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha, Rumiko Takahashi achieved success with her Urusei Yatsura manga series. Serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday from 1978 to 1987, the story revolves around Ataru Moroboshi, a high school student who is chosen to defend Earth against invading aliens in a game of tag. After defeating an alien princess named Lum, Ataru becomes involved in her daily life when she mistakenly believes he has proposed to her. Eventually, Lum’s efforts to win Ataru’s affection pay off.

The original Urusei Yatsura TV anime adaptation premiered in 1981 and aired for 195 episodes until 1986. Unlike the reboot, the original series aimed to adapt Takahashi’s manga in its entirety. It was produced by Pierrot and Studio DEEN and spawned six accompanying animated films. Additionally, Magic Bus and Studio DEEN collaborated on an 11-episode OVA series that released new episodes from 1985 to 1991.
