Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse recently released its credits tease, setting up the third installment in the series, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Unlike the usual trend of superhero movies including a post-credits scene, Across the Spider-Verse opted for a mid-credits text card that acts as a setup for the upcoming film.
Message behind the Across the Spider-Verse Credits
The decision to forgo a post-credits scene was likely made to preserve the shock of the reveal of the alternate universe Miles Morales. The climax of the film left the whereabouts of Spot, the villain who threatened to kill Miles’ family, unclear, which adds to the suspense and anticipation for the next film.
The mid-credits tease confirms that Miles Morales’ story will continue in the third film. It reads “Miles Morales will return in” before revealing the logo for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. This approach is similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which often includes text at the end of their movies indicating that a character will make a return in the future.
Currently, the release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is uncertain. Initially scheduled for March 2024, the film was then removed from the release schedule due to the SAG Afra strike. Additionally, reports of over-working and artist departures during the production of Across the Spider-Verse suggest that the projected release date may not be met, potentially delaying the film’s release until 2025.
The ending of Across the Spider-Verse sets up Beyond the Spider-Verse by leaving Miles on Earth-42, captured by an alternate version of his uncle Aaron Davis. He will also have to face off against an alternate version of himself, who is known as The Prowler in that universe. The film also hints at Miles potentially using his electric powers to escape from his captor.
Meanwhile, Gwen Stacy decides to abandon the Spider-Society and join forces with Miles. She assembles a team of Spider-people, including Peter B. Parker, Spider-Punk, Pavitr Prabhakar, Spider-Byte, Peni Parker, Spider-Man Noir, and Spider-Ham, to help find and save Miles. They will have to battle The Prowler and Spider-Man 2099, along with the rest of the Spider-Society, in a fight to save Miles’ father and keep his family safe.
Overall, the credits tease in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse sets the stage for the continuation of Miles Morales’ story in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. While it may not be a traditional post-credits scene, the tease confirms the development of the next film and leaves audiences eager for more.
