Marvel Studios is set to shake up the MCU lore in their upcoming series, Secret Invasion, by revealing that James Rhodes, played by Don Cheadle, has been secretly replaced by a Skrull. Director Al Selim recently spoke about when he believes this swap may have occurred.
According to Selim, he thinks that Rhodes was swapped with a Skrull during the events of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. In that film, Rhodes, also known as War Machine, loses the use of his legs after being hit by a beam from Vision and crashes to the ground. While Tony Stark creates motorized leg braces for Rhodes, Selim suggests that this was done for the Skrull impersonating Rhodes.
Selim believes that it is more fun for fans to revisit previous moments from the MCU with the knowledge that Rhodes may have been a Skrull. Viewers can now go back and analyze every interaction with Rhodes and decide for themselves if he was a Skrull at that time. However, Selim also hinted that the question may be definitively answered in the upcoming series Armor Wars.
Secret Invasion, headlined by director Ali Selim and head writer Kyle Bradstreet, explores a clandestine invasion of Earth by a group of shapeshifting Skrulls. The series brings back several familiar faces from the MCU, including Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn as Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, and Don Cheadle as Rhodes. They are joined by new additions such as Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Dermot Mulroney.
