Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, directed by James Gunn, is the final project for both Gunn and the original Guardians team. The film was released on May 5, 2023, as part of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite expectations of major character deaths, none of the main Guardians characters die in the film. However, there are several emotional deaths that occur, including the deaths of Lylla, Floor, Teefs, Ayesha, and the Humanimals.

The film begins with the introduction of Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter, seeking revenge on the Guardians for their betrayal in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Warlock attacks the Guardians, injuring Nebula, Groot, Drax, Mantis, and Rocket. Rocket’s life is in danger as he was created with a kill-switch embedded in his body. This forces the Guardians to embark on a mission to save his life.
Throughout the film, there are moments where Rocket is close to death, but he is ultimately saved by Peter Quill and Gamora. The other Guardians also come close to death on multiple occasions, but they all manage to survive. Despite the lack of main character deaths, the film delivers a bittersweet farewell to the original Guardians team.
One of the emotional deaths in the film is that of Lylla, Rocket’s childhood friend. While escaping captivity, Lylla is shot and killed by the High Evolutionary, leading to Rocket’s anger towards his creator. Another emotional moment is the deaths of Floor and Teefs, two other experiments of the High Evolutionary. They are shot by guards during Rocket’s escape attempt.
Elizabeth Debicki’s High Priestess Ayesha and her Sovereign people, who were created by the High Evolutionary, also die in the destruction of Counter-Earth. This marks a tragic origin story for Adam Warlock, who joins the Guardians after his mother and the Animen population are killed.
Although it initially appears that the High Evolutionary dies in the destruction of his ship, it is revealed that he survives and is imprisoned on Knowhere. This leaves the possibility for the villain to return in the MCU’s future.
Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 delivers an emotional story with several deaths that add depth to the film. While the main Guardians characters survive, the film serves as a farewell to the original team and sets the stage for future adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
