NieR: Automata, the popular action RPG game, takes place in a post-apocalyptic earth overrun by killer robots. The game is part of a larger series of games and media that began with Drakengard in 2003. Drakengard is set in a world similar to our own but filled with magic, where demonic beings known as The Watchers are attempting to break into the parallel earth. The protagonist, Prince Caim, opposes them with the help of a dragon named Angelus. It is also revealed that the Red Eye Disease, which was previously used by The Watchers, can infect the machines.
