Author Satoshi Wagahara, known for The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, is set to launch a new light novel series titled Shokurakuen -Meshitopia- Hoshoku Society this fall. The announcement was made by Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko light novel label on their official Twitter account.
Unlike Wagahara’s previous work, Shokurakuen – Meshitopia- Hoshoku Society is a dystopian series that explores society’s obsession with health and the consequences of taking it too far. The story is set in the year 2075 and follows a society that ostracizes and marginalizes individuals who consume even slightly unhealthy food, labeling them as “Addictors.” The main characters are Mito, a member of the government’s “Food Protection Unit,” and an Addictor named Niijima. The two get trapped together in an abandoned building, where Mito discovers and enjoys “Addictor” cuisine for the first time. The story revolves around their relationship as they continue to meet and experience more of this forbidden food.
Wagahara’s previous work, The Devil Is a Part-Timer!, is a light novel series that started in 2011 and features a Demon Lord who is transported to modern Japan and starts working at a fast-food restaurant called “MgRonald’s” in order to support himself. While in human form, the Demon Lord, named Sadao Maou, occasionally uses his devil form and powers to do good deeds, which confuses those who know his true identity. The series also explores the complex relationship between Sadao and Emi Yusa, the one who transported him to Earth and eventually develops feelings for him.
The Devil Is a Part-Timer! was adapted into an anime series in 2013, and a second season premiered in 2022. The popularity of the series led to the release of a third season in July of this year.
Wagahara’s new series, Shokurakuen -Meshitopia- Hoshoku Society, is scheduled to release on Sept. 8. It is yet to be announced when the series will be available internationally. The Devil Is a Part-Timer! is currently available in English through Yen Press.
