Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 introduces a new team for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), setting up a fresh future for the franchise. Contrary to speculation, none of the main Guardians teammates are killed off in this final movie of the trilogy. The new Guardians team includes Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, and Phyla. This combination brings together original members and some new additions.

The official unveiling of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team happens in the post-credits scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Rocket Raccoon is declared the captain of the group, marking his official promotion to leader. Groot, who now stands at his full size, also joins the team. Other members include Kraglin, who has worked with the group before in Thor: Love and Thunder, and Cosmo the Spacedog, who helped the original team on Knowhere. The big addition to the team is Adam Warlock, who transitions from being a villain to a powerful ally. Phyla-Vell, a character with incredible cosmic powers, is also introduced.

The composition of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team in the MCU is unique compared to the comics. While some characters have been members of the Guardians in the comics, this specific combination has never been seen before. However, there are similarities to the comic team, as the MCU’s original lineup was based on a 2008 comic run. The MCU’s new team is essentially a hybrid of that comic roster and the replacement team that formed after the original disbanding.

As for the former members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill (Star-Lord) decides to leave the team and return to Earth to reunite with his grandfather. Rocket Racoon becomes the official captain of the team. Groot remains a part of the new Guardians. Gamora, although she has gained some affection for the Guardians, joins her original Ravager crew. Mantis takes a break from active combat to focus on self-discovery. Drax stays on Knowhere to care for orphaned children, and Nebula becomes a leader on Knowhere to help rebuild society.

While there are no official announcements, it’s expected that the Guardians of the Galaxy will return in the MCU. It is uncertain when or where they will appear next, but possibilities include a fourth Guardians movie or another Phase 5 project. The Marvels, a sequel to Captain Marvel, is loosely tied to space and could potentially feature the Guardians.

Overall, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 sets up a new team for the MCU, introducing a fresh future for the franchise while leaving room for the original characters to continue their own journeys.
