Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 marks the end of James Gunn’s original trio of films in the franchise. The movie introduces a new Guardians team while leaving room for Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord to return. The ending sees the heroes defeating The High Evolutionary and escaping back to Knowhere as it crumbles. Rocket Raccoon learns the truth about his existence and becomes a savior for the High Evolutionary’s other test subjects. The team disbands, with each member realizing their own fate. Star-Lord goes home to his family, Drax becomes a father and protector, Gamora returns to the Ravagers, Nebula takes control of Knowhere, Mantis embarks on her own adventure, and Rocket, Groot, and Kraglin form a new Guardians team with other characters. The movie resolves some of the MCU’s loose threads and brings the Guardians’ journey full circle. The main villain, the High Evolutionary, is defeated by the Guardians, and his creations are saved by the team and taken to Knowhere for protection. Although the High Evolutionary survives, it is unlikely that he will return in future films. Each member of the Guardians of the Galaxy finds a satisfying ending in the movie. Gamora chooses to return to the Ravagers instead of staying with Star-Lord, Drax and Nebula decide to stay on Knowhere to raise the children saved from the High Evolutionary, Star-Lord goes home to his family, and Mantis sets off on her own self-discovery journey. The movie ends with Rocket being named the leader of the new Guardians team, which also includes Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, and Phyla-Vell.
