Adult Swim and Toonami have announced the latest installment in the FLCL anime series, titled FLCL: Grunge. The series is set to premiere on September 9, 2023, and will focus on the lives of three young adults entering the work world. Directed by Hiroshi Takekiyo, the fourth season of FLCL will explore themes of growing up and feature an entirely new art style that complements the narrative.
The trailer for FLCL: Grunge was released on Adult Swim’s YouTube channel and showcases the chaotic lives of the residents in the series. Naota Nandaba introduces the setting, stating that the people who live there have lost all hope and that the place is under martial law. Amarao, another returning character, offers a grim perspective, suggesting that the whole planet should be flattened. The trailer sets a dark and intense tone for the upcoming series.
Despite initial hesitation to work on FLCL: Grunge due to their studio’s focus on CGI animation, director Takekiyo and his team gained confidence in their capability to produce an engaging CGI adaptation that remains faithful to FLCL’s essence. They made a test animation of Haruko, a beloved character from the series, which convinced them of their ability to create an immersive and captivating CGI adaptation. Takekiyo assured fans that they are working diligently to honor the vision of the original creator, Kazuya Tsurumaki, while also embracing new challenges and technology.
The Pillows, the iconic band behind FLCL’s original soundtracks, will also be returning for FLCL: Grunge. Their musical scores are expected to enhance the overall experience of the series.
In addition to FLCL: Grunge, the creators are also working on another season called FLCL: Shoegaze, which will take place ten years after FLCL Alternative. Directed by Yutaka Uemura, this fifth season will introduce a new boy and girl duo to the FLCL universe.
FLCL: Grunge promises to be a thrilling continuation of the FLCL series, with its new art style, engaging CGI animation, and the return of beloved characters and music. Fans of the series can look forward to its premiere on September 9, 2023.
