A recent cosplay upload on Reddit has caught the attention of Berserk fans. The cosplay features a gender-swapped version of the series’ protagonist, Guts, showcasing a detailed and bloody recreation of his Berserker armor and the massive sword, Dragonslayer. The cosplayer, Kantasea, perfectly captures Guts’ confidence and battle prowess, while also reimagining the character’s signature short, spiky hair as longer and more flowing.
Berserk is a popular manga that takes place in a brutal and dark fantasy world. It follows Guts as he seeks vengeance against his former friend and commander, Griffith. After the unexpected passing of the series’ creator, Kentaro Miura, in 2021, mangaka Kouji Mori took over with the help of the artists at Studio Gaga to continue the story.
Fans of Berserk have been keeping the franchise alive through their own fan-made content. In addition to Kantasea’s gender-bent cosplay, there have been other notable examples, such as a crossover fan art that combines the worlds of Berserk and Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. Another fan created an image of a heavily-bandaged Guts contemplating a colorful night sky, inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night painting. A gamer also recreated Berserk’s infamous Eclipse sequence using the Ultrahand ability from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Berserk has not only inspired passionate fans but has also had a significant influence on the entertainment industry. Other mangaka, such as Hajime Isayama (Attack on Titan), Kazue Kato (Blue Exorcist), and Makoto Yukimura (Vinland Saga), draw inspiration from Berserk. The series has also made an impact on the critically acclaimed Netflix Original, Castlevania.
Dark Horse Comics distributes the Berserk manga in North America, and the anime adaptations by Liden Films and Studio 4°C are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
