Release Date and Staff Confirmed in Vibrant Mononoke Trailer

The latest trailer for the upcoming film Mononoke has been released, confirming its release window in 2024. The trailer, available on YouTube, showcases the unique art style of Mononoke with vibrant colors and psychedelic imagery. The focus is mainly on the protagonist, the Medicine Seller, a nameless wanderer. The trailer also introduces the new voice actor for the Medicine Seller, Hiroshi Kamiya, known for his roles in anime series such as Attack on Titan and One Piece.

The trailer also reveals the members of the creative team behind Mononoke. Kenji Nakamura, who directed the original 2007 series, is returning to lead the project, while Twin Engine is producing the film. Other members of the team include character designer Kitsuneko Nagata, editor Shigeru Nishiyama, composer Taku Iwasaki, and directors Yoichi Senzui, Kenichi Shirai, and Yukio Nagasaki.

Mononoke is a spinoff of Toei Animation’s horror anthology series, Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. The original anime aired from July to September 2007 and follows the supernatural adventures of the Medicine Seller as he encounters and destroys spirits that bind themselves to negative human emotions. It is unclear if the film will adapt one of the arcs from the anime series or feature a completely new story.

In addition to the upcoming film, Mononoke has also inspired two manga adaptations. The first was published in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine from 2007 to 2008, while the second, titled Mononoke: Umibōzu, was serialized in Tokuma Shoten’s Monthly Comic Zenon from 2013 to 2015.

For those interested in watching the original Mononoke series, it is available for streaming on Netflix. Physical copies of the show were also released on DVD in North America in 2014.
