The second season of Sword Art Online Alternative Gun Gale Online has been announced after a five-year wait. The announcement was made at the Dengeki Bunko 30th anniversary event, accompanied by a teaser trailer featuring the main character, Llenn. Studio 3Hz, the animation studio behind the first season, will return to produce the second season, and several members of the creative team are also coming back. Tomori Kusunoki will reprise her role as Llenn, but no other cast details have been revealed yet.
Gun Gale Online is a spinoff of the mainline Sword Art Online light novels by Reki Kawahara. It follows a university student who escapes into the virtual world of the full-dive video game named Gun Gale Online. The light novels have produced 13 volumes and sold over one million copies worldwide. The first season of the anime adaptation originally aired from April to June 2018.
In addition to the announcement of the second season, there have been other developments in the Sword Art Online franchise. The second entry in the Sword Art Online Progressive film series, titled Scherzo of Deep Night, was released last year. This film provides a deeper look into the events of the “Aincrad” story arc, with Kirito and Asuna exploring the fifth floor of Aincrad and experiencing growing romantic feelings for each other.
Fans of Sword Art Online are also actively contributing to the franchise through fan-made content. For example, an Instagram user named Tsunai shared an image of six different Asuna cosplays, showcasing the character’s various costumes from different arcs of the anime.
Both Gun Gale Online and the original Sword Art Online anime series are available on Crunchyroll. However, an official release date for Gun Gale Online Season 2 has not been announced yet.
