Bandai Namco has released a new trailer for Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom, the highly anticipated sequel to the anime MSG: SEED Destiny. The film celebrates the 20th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam SEED series and continues the story after the events of the original series and its sequel. The plot follows the characters Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne in Cosmic Era 75, after a coerced peace treaty between the “Naturals” and “Coordinators,” two significant factions in this timeline. Tensions escalate as an Alliance special forces unit seizes elite-level Gundam suits from a ZAFT military base, and two young pilots, Shinn Asuka and Athrun Zala, are tasked with recovering the suits and preventing war.
The trailer provides a glimpse into the upcoming movie, revealing a fresh conflict between ZAFT and Earth Alliance. It introduces Alexei Konoe as the movie’s primary antagonist, a mysterious figure with links to Kira and Athrun’s history. The trailer hints at a potential ZAFT betrayal, raising doubts about the enduring peace achieved after Seed Destiny. The movie explores the themes of “freedom versus destiny” and the characters’ different approaches to ending the war.
Director Mitsuo Fukuda confirmed that the film follows the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny and is written by Fukuda, his late wife Chiaki Morosawa, and light novel author Liu Goto. The production crew includes familiar names from the previous series, such as character designer Hisashi Hirai and animation director Satoshi Shigeta. Returning voice actors include Soichiro Hoshi, Kenichi Suzumura, and Akira Ishida reprising their roles, with Nanako Mori replacing Naomi Shindoh as the voice of Cagalli Yula Athha.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is part of the broader initiative celebrating the 20th anniversary of the original Gundam series. Alongside the film, there will be a video game titled Mobile Suit Gundam UC Engage and a side-story manga titled MSG: SEED Eclipse. The film is expected to be a major anime event in 2024 and serves as an explosive conclusion to the beloved saga of the Cosmic Era.
