Sony has indefinitely postponed the release of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, leaving fans without a new release date. The film is the third installment in Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Verse series and continues the story from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The delay in the release of Spider-Verse 3 is due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in Hollywood. Sony is considering alternative release dates depending on the duration of the strikes. As of now, it is uncertain when the strikes will conclude.
The removal of Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse from Sony’s release date calendar raises questions about when the film will eventually release. One possibility is a summer 2024 release, following the success of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which has earned $677 million worldwide so far. However, the potential overlap with Venom 3 in July 2024 and Kraven the Hunter in August 2024 may deter Sony from choosing a summer release date.
Another option is a holiday 2024 release, around Thanksgiving or Christmas. The first film in the series, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, was released in December 2018, so a release during this popular moviegoing period would make sense. Sony currently has November 8, 2024, reserved for an untitled film, so Beyond the Spider-Verse may potentially move there.
However, Sony may also choose to move Beyond the Spider-Verse to 2025 in order to avoid competition with other superhero films slated for release in 2024. It largely depends on how other studios reshuffle their release calendars and the resolution of the strikes.
Ultimately, the new release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse will be announced once the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are resolved. Sony’s release calendar may also be affected by other studios’ decisions, so there may be further changes in the future. For now, fans will have to wait patiently for updates on the film’s release.
