Star-Lord’s Return: A Disappointing Guardians of the Galaxy Spin-Off

Despite teasing a spin-off involving Star-Lord, it seems like the least exciting follow-up to the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Director James Gunn revealed that a Legendary Star-Lord movie could focus on him adapting to Earth, but this premise seems somewhat boring and lacks emotional weight. Other potential spin-offs from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, such as Rocket leading a new team or Gamora and the Ravagers, sound much more exciting and worth exploring than a Star-Lord fish-out-of-water story.

The future of the Guardians of the Galaxy team is uncertain after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, one character whose future was teased is Star-Lord, played by Chris Pratt. In the film’s post-credit scene, Star-Lord was shown reconciling with his grandfather on Earth, hinting at his return in future MCU projects.

James Gunn, the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, recently revealed what the Legendary Star-Lord spin-off could be about. He described it as a story where Star-Lord is on Earth, trying to adapt to the environment in the same way he had to adapt to outer space. However, many fans feel that this premise is not as exciting as other potential spin-off ideas.

The main issue with a Legendary Star-Lord movie is that it undermines the emotional weight of his character arc in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The ending of the film showed Star-Lord finally reuniting with his family on Earth and choosing a simpler, more grounded life. If he were to immediately leave Earth again for another adventure, it would diminish the impact of his character’s growth.

Additionally, the premise of Star-Lord adapting to Earth seems somewhat dull. Similar fish-out-of-water stories have already been explored in the MCU, such as Captain America’s adjustment to the modern world. Star-Lord growing up in the 80s means he would only need to acclimatize to a few modern enhancements, which are similar to the cosmic environments he is already familiar with.

However, it is suggested that a Marvel Studios Special Presentation, a shorter comedic format, could work for a Star-Lord on Earth story. It would lower the stakes and tell a more carefree story that could end with Star-Lord still at home with his grandfather. This could provide a few years for him to spend with his relatives before being called back to action.

In comparison, other potential spin-off ideas from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, such as a story centered on Rocket leading a new Guardians team or a story with Gamora and the Ravagers, sound much more exciting. These ideas offer new adventures and explore morally gray characters in the galaxy. Overall, while Star-Lord’s return is welcome, the current premise for his spin-off does not sound as interesting as other possibilities.
