Legendary Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama’s manga series Sand Land is set to be adapted into an animated movie, with a release date scheduled for the summer of 2023 in Japanese theaters. The Sand Land project was first announced in December 2022 and a teaser video showcasing the main characters and animation quality was released soon after. The movie will be produced by Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and ANIMA.

Sand Land is a dystopian fantasy series set in a desert world where both humans and demons suffer from a chronic water shortage. The story follows Beelzebub, the pink-skinned prince of demons, his friend Thief, and a small-town sheriff named Rao as they team up to find the legendary Phantom Lake hidden somewhere in the desert. The manga was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump for a short time between May and August 2000 and later collected into a single volume.

The series has developed a cult following and showcases many characteristics of Toriyama’s works, but with a darker tone. Although Sand Land retains Toriyama’s love for humor and unique vehicle designs, such as the tank ridden by the main characters, it sets itself apart from his more lighthearted works like Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball.

The announcement of the Sand Land movie has been met with enthusiasm from fans of Toriyama’s manga and anime. The first-look trailer suggests that the production values will be high, and with Toriyama’s direct involvement in the project, the movie has the potential to become a blockbuster upon its release on August 18.
