The First Slam Dunk is adapted from Takehiko Inoue’s Slam Dunk manga, which was first released in Weekly Shonen Jump in October 1990. The story follows Sakuragi Hanamichi, a high school delinquent who joins the Shohoku high school basketball team to impress a girl named Haruko Akagi. Over time, Sakuragi develops a genuine love for the sport and his teammates. The film focuses on Sakuragi’s teammate, Ryota Miyagi, as he deals with the loss of his brother and prepares for the Inter-High School National Championships. The film is written and directed by Takehiko Inoue himself.
Slam Dunk has also been adapted into a TV anime series, which aired from 1993 to 1996. The series consisted of 101 episodes and was helmed by Chief Director Nobutaka Nishizawa. Toei Animation also produced several animated specials that were released alongside the series.
The First Slam Dunk is currently playing in theaters across North America in both subbed and English-dubbed versions. The Slam Dunk manga is available in English from VIZ Media.
