Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming film, Gran Turismo, marks Orlando Bloom’s return to major movies since 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. While Bloom has been involved in various projects since then, including the TV series Carnival Row, none have been as significant as this new venture. In light of this, let’s take a look back at some of Bloom’s best roles throughout his career.
First on the list is his role as Legolas in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy from 2001 to 2003. Bloom’s portrayal of the kick-ass elf warrior is perfectly cast, with his character having a compelling arc and standout sequences that prevent him from fading into the background. The Hobbit films also exist, but they are not as noteworthy as the original trilogy.
Next is his relatively minor but significant role in Black Hawk Down (2001). As the young Blackburn, Bloom leaves a lasting impression despite his character being discarded early on in the film.
Bloom also had a memorable performance as Will Turner in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise from 2003 to 2007. While the later films in the series may not be considered classics, the original trilogy offers old-school breezy fun, and Bloom’s portrayal of the straight man to Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow is strong and memorable.
In 2004, Bloom played against type as Paris in the sword-and-sandals epic Troy. This performance is considered by many to be one of his best, as he holds his own against bigger names like Brad Pitt and Eric Bana and seizes key scenes to showcase his acting prowess.
Lastly, Bloom’s role as Balian de Ibelin in Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven (2005) may not be exceptional, but it is a decent portrayal. The film, especially the Director’s Cut, has gained more appreciation over time, and Bloom’s performance, although unexceptional, works well within the context of the story.
