Sony Pictures has made changes to its Marvel movie release slate, including new release dates for Venom 3 and Madame Web. The release of Kraven the Hunter has been delayed by 10 months, while Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been removed from the calendar due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Sony’s Marvel Universe consists of movies focused on Spider-Man related characters, such as Venom and its sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage, as well as animated films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The studio has now made changes to its release date calendar, adding new dates for previously undated movies and removing others.
Venom 3, which was expected to open in October 2024, now has an official release date in July 2024. Madame Web will open two days earlier than previously planned. However, Kraven the Hunter has been delayed by nearly 10 months to August 2024. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, originally set for a March 2024 release, has been removed from the calendar, with Sony considering new dates depending on the duration of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
The biggest change is the 10-month delay for Kraven the Hunter, which gives Sony more time to promote the movie and avoid competition with Marvel Studios’ Loki. The delay also allows for more hype to be built around the new Spider-Man Universe property. It is unclear why Kraven is opening less than two months after Venom 3, but it is possible that Sony hopes the success of Venom 3 will generate interest in Kraven’s standalone film.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s removal from the calendar is a disappointment, as it was supposed to follow up on the cliffhanger ending of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The new release date for the film is uncertain and will depend on the resolution of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. However, these strikes are important for the industry and its workers, so their resolutions take precedence over the release date of Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Sony has made these changes to its Marvel release slate, but more changes may come in the future.
